Taking Fight with Guardians

According to Animation World Network (Desowitz, 2010). Taking Fight with Guardians, this movie used animal logic as a part of project to help them become successful. In this movie, they are talking about owls overcoming fascism to prevent their home, families and heritage. Making cartoon movie about owls and their bucolic world are a lot more complex, but they still like to do in this way. Eric Leighton said that “He like the idea that getting away from the animation mainstream”

The animators of this film try to make the owls become a realistic, because if it just likes a cartoon, the consumer will not buy it at all. Thus, they have to learn toward the naturalistic side of the owl. They have to understand a lot more about the owls, for instance, how they fly, blanching and walking, and combine those things with their character to make it look more realistic. This method is moved a little toward of traditional animation techniques. Moreover, in this movie, they did not use the wing, hand or fingers because those thing don’t have muscles and it cannot move by itself. This problem makes more works for animators to think more creatively about how to convey the emotion, so they were given more time to study the owl footage and anatomy.

The next important thing is about feather system. During this step, everything is importance to make the character look more realistic. Include of many step.

1. Right up front
2. The grooming tool
3. Rendering
4. Collision
5. Feather effect
6. Winged on feathers
7. Snow on feather
8. Collisions between feathers on individual and different character.

The last method is to combination all the things together
1. Intersect
2. Renders
3. Context

This movie still used Softimage and Maya program to create a lot of new proprietary grooming and shading of the animal logic. They did dynamic simulations for wind effect and the local feathers for example snow rain clouds and fire. They also create the beautiful large eyes which keep the deep refraction to the people who watch it.

In my opinion, this movie is very interesting because this movie show the owls’ life style though the cartoon and it also looks like the lifelike. Thus, this movie can convinced the child then to care about the owls and learn the owls’ lifestyle for instance how they live, and how they find the food, so this movie is very benefit for children. Moreover, they also used many techniques through the movie, so other animators can see and combine those new techniques to their animation film in the future.

This article might be helpful for my term paper because all the details are combining the technique of the film making for 3d animation, so I will used some data to support the idea in my term paper to show how 3d technique is differences from the 2d technique. In addition, the ways of film making are also differences.
